Brad Matthews’ Studio
Art and Humanity

Hello and Welcome
I am Brad Matthews. I have been sculpting figuratively since 2004 and rendering my insights to the human experience ever since. My work includes portraits as well as wholly imagined characters, both in-the-round and in bas relief. While all my pieces initially take form in clay, they may be completed in kiln-cast glass, foundry-cast bronze, cold-cast resin, or kiln-fired ceramic.
My sculptural beings emerge from the clay with their expressions of underlying experiences and personal narratives. I discover and facilitate this emergence, as much as I purposefully shape the clay to express some experience I have in mind.
My work invites a continuing dialogue – with the materials, my audience and myself. My content, forms, and materials combine to attract and inspire exploration of the humanity my works express. I am told that interacting with my sculptures evokes feelings and thoughts – elicits memories and reflections – invites imagination of conversations and narratives – and refreshes understandings of the meaning of the human experience.

Ceramics
The foundation of sculpture begins with ceramics. It is the essential building block of my art.

Glass
Unparalleled depth and dimension is what glass instills in my work. With portraits it allows you to look into the soul of my subjects.

Bronze
Provocative and sensual, bronze transforms any piece, not matter how small, into something monumental.

Resin
There is a subtle translucency to resin that evokes an experience not found in other materials.
